Hi all,
Waterloo Metro reaches Practical Completion
Congratulations to the E&I division for reaching practical completion on the Waterloo Metro station, a marquee project that commenced on site in October 2020. The project, led by Ray Khairallah (Construction Manager), Michael Dart (Project Manager) and Ashley Hutchinson (Site Manager) on site, was successfully delivered with tremendous feedback from our client, John Holland Group.
The new station is around 25 metres below ground level and will take pressure off nearby stations and provide a fast metro rail link to surrounding areas. It’s great to see Star Group continue to support the future of transport infrastructure in NSW with this project.
We were also recently advised that our Waterloo Metro station project is a finalist in the Industrial Large category at the upcoming NSW NECA Excellence Awards. This nomination is a credit to the hard work and dedication of the team, which, along with Ray, Michael and Ashley, consisted of Tim Rose, Ben Miles, George Nikoloulias, Blake Smallwood, Sam Morsillo, Mai Tat and of course of our tradespeople and apprentices, too many to acknowledge by name.
Looking forward, there are a number of new metro stations in the pipeline including the Sydney Metro West railway between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD. I’m confident the experience gained, and positive client feedback received on the Waterloo project will position Star Group well to pursue these opportunities.
New Business
A particular shout out to all involved in picking up the delivery of the UNSW integrated tenancy fit out for the electrical services within the Health Translation Hub (HTH) project at the Randwick Hospital Precinct. The UNSW tenancy fit out integrates education, clinical and research spaces, with the goal of improving health outcomes. The fit out also includes the Children’s Cancer Institute (Part Level 3 & Level 4) and The George Institute (Level 8).
The successful award of the fit out follows Star Group being selected by Hansen Yuncken to deliver the HTH base building which is now well underway by our Construction division. The fit out will roughly double the contract value of the project.
Performance appraisal process for salaried employees
As touched on in my March update, following the conclusion of the roll out of a new performance appraisal process for salaried employees, we were going to share a short anonymous survey for feedback about the process to help inform future improvements. This survey has now been distributed by Ryan Davey, and I encourage all our salaried employees to participate. We will be reviewing our appraisal processes for wages employees later this year.
Humpty Dumpty Foundation 2024 Balmoral Burn event
On Sunday 26th May, we had another record year of support for the Humpty Dumpty Foundation's Balmoral Burn with over 50 team members and family taking on the hill! A huge thank you to all those who took some time out of their weekend to get involved. In recognition of 10 years of supporting Humpty, this year we were the race category sponsor for the Celebration Run, which many of our people participated in, along with fielding three teams of four runners in the corporate relays.
A special mention to one of our relay teams including Jack Mulvey (Electrician, City Service), Blake Hopkins (Electrician, John Hunter Hospital), Matthew Costelloe (Foreman, John Hunter Hospital) and myself - for successfully defending Star Group's 2023 title in the Building & Construction industry race. I'm personally glad we got the win, as I wouldn't have heard the end of it for the next 12 months if we lost.
Humpty Dumpty, through community and corporate support, were able to raise $1.5 million at the 2024 Burn. These funds go directly to providing children’s medical equipment & health initiatives to around 500 hospitals and health services across Australia. Our support this year included a donation of medical equipment to John Hunter Children’s Hospital, a hospital of course close to our business through our current involvement in the John Hunter Health & Innovation Precinct project.
