Hi all,

Star Lanka

My October kicked off with a visit to our team in Colombo, Sri Lanka. For those who may be unaware, we opened our first office in Colombo in 2013 and now have a team of 10 working in estimating, design, and administration in collaboration with our teams in Australia. The team is led by our Country Manager, Himani Nawindika. We spent some time running through the current focus areas for the team as well as opportunities for further growth and development. A big thank you again to Himani and the team for hosting me!

Client feedback

Earlier in the year, I mentioned we were starting to survey our clients on recently completed projects to get feedback and to help us be the contractor and service provider of choice in support of our #1 client satisfaction goal. While we're in regular communication with our clients at multiple levels, and nothing beats face-to-face conversation, using these surveys has been an additional useful tool. As of the end of October, I'm pleased to share the following:

  • We've surveyed 26 recently completed projects, with 17 responses received
  • 100% of clients who responded are either satisfied or very satisfied with Star Group
  • 82% of clients who responded are highly likely to recommend us to others
  • 82% of clients who responded are highly likely to work with Star Group again
  • When it comes to our values, Trust and Passion appear to be our most visible behaviours to clients. At the same time, Creativity (innovation and non-traditional solutions) has the most room for improvement.

Some examples of client feedback from these surveys include:

  • Farelly Construction Services, Tronox Atlas Campese Mineral Sand Process Plant, delivered by Engineering & Infrastructure - quality work, on time, met their schedules and provided accurate forecasts. Also assisted with the procurement and problem-solving design issues. I would personally engage STAR again for their quality of workmanship and the open communication to problems but an active approach in rectifying any issues. Very personable team from Senior Management through to all levels of work groups.
  • Lendlease, HMAS Watson, delivered by Construction - The Star Team have performed very well at HMAS Watson, they have gone out of their way to assist with hitting milestones. The last 3 years have been very successful, and I look forward to another successful journey over the upcoming years. Keep it up!
  • Bloc, 35 Honeysuckle Drive, delivered by Northern branch - Star Group worked collaboratively with all stakeholders, are great communicators and problem solvers. One of the best subcontractors on the project and were great to deal with.
  • BESIX Watpac, HV works for Eden Park project, delivered by Elect Energy - Great support, excellent communication, responsive, close follow up, competent and experienced staff and workforce.
These results are strong and reflect the great relationships we have and our standing in the market. Full credit to our people and, in particular, our delivery teams for making this a reality day in and day out.

Elect Energy General Manager appointment

Stephen Jenkins joined Star Group this month in the role of General Manager, Elect Energy, replacing the role left vacant by John Slater. In this role Steve will have overall responsibility for the performance and growth of Elect Energy, working closely with the Elect team as well as management.

Steve is an accomplished project and operations manager with over 15 years industry experience, joining us from utility and infrastructure specialist Ultegra with prior experience at HV services provider Addelec.

I want to thank and acknowledge the hard work of the Elect team throughout the transition period, particularly Wayne Waud, Carly Tomison, Liam Eisenhuth, Jack Fletcher, Sachida Reddy, Antonia Vegar, as well as Star Group veteran Vince Rosslind for providing support and mentorship on site.

New business

On the new business front, for October, congratulations to:

  • Condell Park Service, for picking up the electrical infrastructure upgrade works at Birkenhead Point Shopping Centre with new client Mirvac, as well as an LED lighting upgrade at Royal North Shore Hospital with Ventia.
  • Audio-Visual, for picking up the Boot Factory Bondi refurbishment with Schiavello. You may recall the team previously won this project with contractor LLOYD, who unfortunately went into administration. A shout-out to the team for seeing this process through and supporting Waverly Council, positioning us to stay with the project with new contractor, Schiavello.
  • ACT Branch, for picking up the Canberra Imaging fit-out for ON Construction.
  • Elect Energy, for picking up works for Lendlease at One Circular Quay and CPB Contractors at Campbelltown Hospital.

Cheers,
John
