The theme of 2023's National Reconciliation Week is: “Be a Voice for Generations".
One of our dedicated Diversity & Inclusion Committee members, Liam, is doing this by sharing stories to help educate us on the impact of learning and sharing your family history.
“My name is Liam, and I am proudly from the Wiradjuri tribe near Parkes, NSW. My great-grandmother was born a Wiradjuri woman in 1882. She was taken from her family as a child and placed into an assimilation camp. Growing up, she was not to ask questions about the Wiradjuri people and culture, nor was she ever taught their ways. As a result, much of our family history and connection to Indigenous Australia has been lost.
For me, being a voice for generations is to live by the change you want to see in the future. It is society and workplaces working together to bridge the gap for Aboriginal people and women. With my recent election as a Star Group Diversity & Inclusion Committee member, I am excited to work towards fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace.
I hope to learn more about the Wiradjuri people and culture and share it with the committee and Star Group to play my part in promoting inclusion and passing on the message that no matter what you look like, everyone has a family history linked to a culture that you should be proud of. We need to learn and share the story of our cultural connections to educate society and workplaces on diversity and inclusion. It is never too late to learn about your family history.”
We thank Liam for being a role model in this space and for championing “Being a Voice for Generations” within Star Group.
